Best Places to Visit in Mexico in July

1. Oaxaca de Juarez

Oaxaca de Juarez, known simply as Oaxaca City, is the capital of the southern state of Oaxaca, a region popular for its agricultural importance to Mexico. There are several important archaeological sites like Monte Alban, many cathedrals like Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, and colorful markets in Oaxaca City that are worth exploring. Given the region's indigenous influences, Oaxaca is also blessed with unique cuisine. During your time here, do make sure you try Tlayudas, a type of Mexican pizza, Mole de Oaxaca, the deliciously rich sauce special to the region, and their special Empanadas that are unlike any other you may have had in terms of shape and taste. Guelaguetza Festival: Celebrated over the course of the last two Mondays of July in Oaxaca de Juarez (known simply as Oaxaca City), the Guelaguetza Festival is a huge deal in the whole state of Oaxaca. Each of the state's even regions come together in the city's downtown area to celebrate the festival by performing traditional dances, singing folk songs, and organizing parades.

Whale Shark Festival: Usually celebrated during the third week of July in Isla Mujeres, this three-day festival is an unmissable opportunity to get up close and swimming with the world's largest fish, the Whale Shark. Local authorities and marine biologists get together to organize the event with conservation, education, and sustainable ecotourism as its focus areas. If you're traveling with kids, you're in luck, because there are many festival activities planned with children in mind.
