Top 10 Things to Do in Istanbul

By Kimi Huang | Updated Nov. 10, 2021

Istanbul is a fascinating megacity with a history spanning over 4,000 years. It was home to three major civilizations — Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman — and the architecture and culture of the old city still reflect the influences of the empires that once ruled there.

A bridge between Europe and Asia, Istanbul is divided by the narrow waterway known as the Bosporus. There are plenty of things to do in this bustling and vibrant city. Here is our list of the top 10.

Visit the Hagia Sophia

Any trip to Istanbul would be incomplete without a visit to the Hagia Sophia. Built as a church during the rule of the Byzantines, it was later converted into a mosque by the Ottomans, who were so impressed by its intricate mosaics that they left them largely untouched.

Visitors can marvel at a beautiful blend of Christian and Islamic aesthetics, and be wowed by the monumental dome that appears to float above the ceiling.

In 1935, the Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum. Visitors can enter daily to see its stunning interiors and famous mosaics and the Sultan's Lodge.

Visit the Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque was built by Sultan Ahmet, and is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture — it is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings on earth. It draws its name from the 20,000 handmade blue tiles that line its ceiling.

As this mosque is a regular place of worship, visitors are asked to dress respectfully and enter outside of regular worship hours.

All visitors must remove their shoes and women must cover their hair.

Visit Topkapiı Palace

Topkapi Palace was home to the Ottoman sultans who walked its halls for over 400 years. The rooms of this palace hosted social events that were instrumental in drafting the administrative policies that shaped the very development of Turkish civilization.

The palace officially became a museum in 1924. It features brilliant architecture, manicured courtyards, and extensive weaponry, porcelain, art, and fabric collections.

Haggle in the Grand Bazaar

Travelers who love to shop should definitely not miss out on a visit to the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. It is an important trading center dating back to the 15th century.

With its 60 streets of 5,000-plus shops and vast range of products including rugs, clothing, art, and spices — all interspersed with cafes and restaurants — this bazaar promises countless delights around every corner.

It is a great place for visitors to pick up a souvenir or two.

Explore the Basilica Cistern

Did you know Istanbul had an underground cistern? The Basilica Cistern, resting beneath the city of Istanbul, is the largest of several hundred ancient Byzantine water storage caverns. It houses two large stone carvings of Medusa heads.

During Ottoman rule, the cistern provided filtered water to the Palace of Constantinople, and later to Topkapı Palace.

As visitors progress through this subterranean cistern, the amazing Byzantine artwork, illuminated columns, and novel pillars, such as two stone Medusa heads, come into view.

Climb to the Top of Galata Tower

Galata Tower, one of the iconic symbols of Istanbul, is situated in Galata on a hill that affords some of the best panoramic views of the old city and its surroundings, particularly on sunny days.

Constructed in the Middle Ages by Italian merchants from Genoa, it functioned at different times as a prison, observatory, and watchtower. Today, its upper reaches include a bar and restaurants.

Join a Bosporus Cruise

Istanbul is the only city in the world to span two continents. The Bosporus Strait divides Turkey's western and Asian sides.

Bosporus cruise boats depart from the Eminönü docks — visitors can enjoy a scenic boat ride along the Bosporus Strait, admiring both the Asian and European sides of Istanbul.

Sail past some historical sites like Galata Tower and Dolmabahçe Palace and witness the Bosporus Bridge that connects Asia and Europe. This is a great way to get a new perspective on both sides of this spectacularly diverse city.

Taste Street Food

Turkish cuisine ranks amongst the best in the world, and Istanbul's streets provide a veritable banquet of the nation's best dishes: it is a great city for foodies.

Visitors can eat obscure Turkish specialties typical of distant villages without ever leaving Istanbul, such as simit (a round crunchy bread dotted with sesame), içli köfte (a crispy bulgur shell filled with minced meat, parsley, and sautéed pine nuts), balık ekmek (fish sandwich), dondurma (traditional Turkish ice cream), and so on.

There is no need to worry about hygiene: if the street vendor is busy, it means the food is fresh and delicious.

Try a Hamman (Turkish Bath)

A hammam is a traditional Turkish bath where visitors are treated to a wet steam bath in extremely hot temperatures, followed by exfoliation and possibly a massage; they are then scrubbed vigorously till they howl in pain or pleasure.

With options ranging from cheap to ultra-luxurious, this will be a never-to-be-forgotten experience.

Experience the Nightlife

When the sun sets, there are various options to experience the nightlife in Istanbul. From devout whirling dervishes and seductive belly dancers to the plentiful bars around Taksim Square in Galata, joining the nightlife is a great way to build a close connection with the local culture.
