Casablanca stands on the Atlantic coast in western Morocco. Most people choose Casablanca as their arrival or departure city because of the convenient transportation. It acts as the busiest port and biggest economic center of Morocco and is famous for its modernized architecture but its mixture of old and new can still keep your eyes busy. Here are the top 8 things to see:
The Unparalleled Mosque — the Hassan II Mosque
The Hassan II Mosque is the third biggest mosque in the world and the only one built on the sea (one-third of it). Designed by Michel Pinseau, it took 6 years to complete and cost 500 million US dollars.
It is entirely made of white marble. The main building is 200 meters wide and covers an area of over 20,000 square meters, which is about three times the size of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Its minaret reaches a height of 210 meters.
To make it magnificent and majestic inside, colorful marble and mosaic tiles were extensively used and 51 tons of Venetian crystal glass were used just for decorative chandeliers.
Amazingly, modernized technology was used to make it "the eighth wonder of the world" in many people's eyes. For example, the roof – which is 60 meters high – can be opened in 5 minutes to disperse the heat or let sunlight in, the marble floor can be heated automatically, and 25 automatic doors are made of titanium alloy, which have anti-corrosion properties against seawater.
It's also one of the few mosques that welcome non-Muslims. Except for Fridays, it's open for visitors at 9am, 10am, 11am, and 2pm every day, for 1 hour each time.
La Corniche
Your brain may feel fatigued after the explosion of information while in the Hassan II Mosque so a leisurely walk in La Corniche seems necessary. This beachfront area runs for about 7 kilometers along the shoreline and is not far from the mosque (only about 15 minutes' drive). There are pleasant Atlantic Ocean views, a refreshing breeze, and you will also find people watching interesting.
Numerous restaurants, bars, and cafés will call out to your roaring stomach and fatigued legs. With a Southern France vibe, a brief lazy moment with a distant view of the Hassan II Mosque can be treasured. Sunbathers, surfers, and swimmers will all be satisfied, especially in summer.
Morocco Mall
At the end of La Corniche is Morocco Mall, which is one of the biggest malls in Africa. The egg-shaped main building is completely covered with mirrored glass and immediately drags you back into modern life.
Couples and families may even find that half a day feels short inside it. Children will like the LED screen on the floor, the indoor ice-skating rink, indoor fairground, and indoor aquarium, which is about two stories high and looks like a huge glass cup with a shark and diver inside.
Old Medina
The Old Medina was originally built around 900 to 1500 AD but was destroyed in 1755 by an earthquake. The current Old Medina in Casablanca was rebuilt after 1770. It is not as famous as the one in Morocco but it's a good idea to immerse yourself into the local pace of daily life.
You'll probably get lost wandering in the maze of alleys so some assistance from a local guide is a good idea. It's intriguing to discover some of the Berber culture in a Berber mosque and sense this ancient community that's surrounded by an urban atmosphere.
Rick's Café
Inside the Old Medina, Rick's Café completely replicates the Rick's Café in the movie Casablanca. As you may know, no scenes in this famous movie ever took place in Casablanca — the movie was filmed in Brazil instead and Rick's Café was a photo studio.
Another fact is that the owner of this café, Ms. Kathy Kriger, spent all of her savings and also took out a loan to cover the costs of bringing Rick's Café into reality in 2004. This place acts as an oasis both geographically and, more importantly, spiritually.
Appreciating the piano solo As Times Goes By performed by the manager Issam Chabaa while savoring gin and making small talk with "Madame Rick", as frequenters call Ms. Kathy Kriger, in the late evening will surely rank as the most special experience on your list.
It is located at 248 Boulevard Sour Jdid, Place du Jardin Public, Ancienne Médina, Casablanca. It opens from 12–3pm and 6pm–1am.
Quartier Habous
Compared to the Old Medina, Quartier Habous is called the "New Medina" (Nouvelle Médina). Built for welcoming new migrants during the French colonial period, it is based on the local traditional living habits and customs.
Quartier Habous is widely liked for its flea market. Passing through arches, shopping like a local, and enjoying the fun of bargaining can be a winning choice if you have enough time.
The Marché Central
Located in the city center, the Marché Central can be easily reached by the Casa Tramway and is another place that's full of life. The historical wet market offers meat, fruit, vegetables, and fresh seafood, and is only open during the day.
The seafood market (fish market) is quite famous and interestingly absorbing. Fishmongers fervently introduce their products to you like a competition. After the deal is done, your selections can be cooked with local flavors by any of the numerous eateries nearby and served with grilled vegetables, bread, and salads.
Music Festival in April
For jazz lovers or enthusiasts of electronic, rap, rock, and hardcore music, Casablanca in April just cannot be missed. The music festivals Jazzablanca and Boulevard de jeunes musiciens every April will undoubtedly make your mood soar into the sky.
Jazzablanca is normally held at Hippodrome Casa-Anfa. As one of the most important music festivals in Morocco, it's well-known for inviting famous jazz performers.
Le Boulevard de jeunes musiciens is normally held at Stade du Club Olympique de Casablanca (COC), Stade du R.U.C., and Les Anciens Abattoirs de Casablanca. Talented young musicians from all over the country are attracted to attend this competition, which is a way for them to gain success.
