Related Regulations

Passport Requirements

The passports must have at least 6 months' validity at the time of entry and there must be one blank page in the passport for an entry stamp.

Currency Restrictions

For entry: You will need to declare if you are carrying large quantities of currency when you enter Morocco. Therefore, it's recommended to take a credit card and a small amount of US dollars, euros, or sterling with you and then withdraw or exchange some local currency after you go through customs.

To exit: It's prohibited to export Moroccan currency (dirhams). Therefore, it's better to plan the amount of Moroccan cash you need carefully and spend it or exchange it back to your currency before leaving. While exchanging the currency, please keep the receipt as proof in case you need to exchange dirhams back to your currency.

Overstays

If you can enjoy the visa-free policy but want to stay longer than the visa-free duration in Morocco, you will need to request an extension of stay in advance to avoid any legal action or penalty.

Lost or Stolen Passports

If you accidentally lose your passport, please obtain a police report of a lost or stolen passport in the area where it occurred. The local police may require evidence of your citizenship of your country before issuing the report so please contact the consulate of your country as extra confirmation, just in case.

Local Laws and Special Circumstances

  • Every visitor is subject to the local laws. You will be faced with expulsion, arrest, or imprisonment if you break them. Be cautious and patient while traveling as it's possible to unknowingly violate the local laws. For example, purchasing or selling marijuana is illegal in Morocco but dealers sell marijuana in Chefchaouen and it seems quite normal for local people to smoke it.
  • The official religion in Morocco is Islam but the local government won't interfere with other religious activities, such as Jewish and Christian activities. However, you can get into trouble, sometimes serious trouble, if trying to proselytize. It's not recommended to debate about religion with any Moroccans.
  • Same-sex sexual relations are illegal in Morocco and penalties of fines and jail time are given.
  • The Moroccan customs regulations for the temporary importation or exportation of some products can be very strict. These items include firearms, drones, religious materials, antiquities, business equipment, and large quantities of currency.
  • It's prohibited to mail passports across international borders according to the local law.
  • Taking photos of sensitive places may cause you problems, especially military locations and security interests. If you want to take photos of a palace, diplomatic mission, government building, or another sensitive facility, please ask for permission first.
