1. Start your Spain Trip in Madrid, Watch a Traditional Flamenco Show
Most international flights into Spain arrive in Madrid, and given that it is the country's capital city, it's as good a place as any to start your journey! We recommend arriving in Madrid and spending a few days there to sightsee, acclimatize, and recover from any potential jet lag.
Madrid is full of venues to watch a traditional flamenco show, and we recommend spending one of your evenings watching the beautiful performance. Flamenco is around 200 years old, but it has roots dating back 2,000 years. Today there are 60 different styles, many of which are still showcased in performances throughout Spain, mixing Islamic, Andalusian, gypsy, and Sephardic influences.

2. Enjoy Gràcia Festival in Barcelona
In August, Barcelona celebrates Gràcia Festival, a week-long celebration with colorful street displays in the area of Gràcia, which the festival is named after. This is the perfect time to visit Barcelona, with streets competing for the best decorations making exploring the city even more exciting.
During the day, you will find street sales selling food and activities for kids, and in the evenings the bars come to life. In 2025, this festival is held between August 15 and August 21.
After checking out the street decorations, we suggest visiting the most popular Gaudí sites in Barcelona. 3. Watch the World-Famous Tomato-Throwing Festival in Buñol near Valencia
On August 27 in 2025, La Tomatina is held in Buñol, which you may recognize as Spain's tomato-throwing festival. This festival is generally held on the last Wednesday of August, and has drawn people to Buñol, a small village near Valencia, since 1945.
Allegedly an argument at a parade in 1945 is the origins of this festival, when an unfortunately-located fruit and vegetable stall got in the way, and a tomato fight broke out. In recent years, 120 tons of tomatoes have been thrown on this day at noon annually. Tickets are limited, so we do recommend booking well in advance if you want to join in on the fun.
For the rest of your time in Valencia, we recommend visiting the beautiful buildings there, including the Valencia Cathedral, the Church of San Nicolás, Plaça de la Verge, and the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia. There is lots to see depending on your interests and how much time you have.
4. Swim in Mallorca's Clear Waters
What could be better than spending the hot month of August on a beautiful Mediterranean Island? Mallorca is a tourist hot spot, and August is a great month to visit, although there is the potential that it is on the busier side, but that is for good reason.
The island is surrounded by turquoise blue waters with secret coves, golden beaches, lush green mountains, beautiful cliffs leading to villages with views over the ocean.
We recommend visiting Puerto Pollensa, where there are no tall buildings, only stretches of beautiful beaches, palm trees, pine trees, cafés and restaurants. There is a huge range of hotels in Mallorca, you could go as fancy as you'd like, and there are also more budget-friendly options, making it the perfect holiday island.
Crowds and Costs for Traveling in August
August is peak tourist season in Spain, particularly in Mallorca, and we do recommend booking ahead. High temperatures combined with European and North American summer holidays mean that there are tourists coming from all over the world. Accommodation can be on the more expensive side, and there also will be more crowds at the top tourist destinations.
What to Wear in August
To beat the heat in Spain in August, we suggest light-colored clothing made of natural, more breathable fabrics such as linen or cotton. It's a good idea to pack some shorts, dresses, skirts, and airy shirts and tops. You will also need to bring swimwear, of course, and supportive footwear so you can enjoy your exploration of Spain.
If you are planning on spending more time in the sun, we recommend bringing plenty of sunblock, a hat, as well as sunglasses to protect your skin as there is lots of sun in Spain in August, particularly in the middle of the day.
