The Best Places to Visit in Spain in November
November sees autumnal temperatures in Spain, with cool to mild weather, the chance of a warm day at the beginning of the month, and just 20% chance of rain. The lower temperatures are perfect for sightseeing for those who don't want to walk around Spain at the peak of summer, and also make this a perfect time of year to visit for some walking or hiking.
Traveling to Spain in November, we suggest visiting Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Seville. There you'll be able to experience a mix of beautiful architecture, delicious food, interesting history, and impressive nature.

1. Explore Madrid and Hike the Sierra de Guadarrama Mountain Range
Madrid is a stunning city with a lot to offer, and as the capital of Spain, it is worth spending multiple days here. From the Cibeles Fountain to the Museum del Prado and the Royal Palace, you could spend days walking around the city visiting the sights. For more information on the sights, check out our piece about visiting Spain in April, and for more information about tapas to try, check out our piece about visiting Spain in March.
There is also lots to do for the more-active visitor, as Madrid is not far from the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, home to stunning grasslands, pine forests, and oak groves. Lots of animals also call the mountains home, including Iberian ibex, roe deer, fallow deer, weasels, wild cats, foxes, and even the Spanish imperial eagle and Eurasian black vulture.
As the park is huge, there are lots of hiking routes. For a moderate trail we recommend Manzanares El Real. This should take approximately 2 to 3 hours, and takes you past waterfalls and rapids. It is not an isolated trail, with it being popular with hikers, making it a good first hike in the mountain range. For a more challenging route we suggest the Seven Peaks trail, which takes around 4 hours to complete with a lot more elevation.
2. Explore Montserrat Barcelona
Barcelona is a must-visit when you are in Spain, and is home to the impressive architectural feats dreamed up by Gaudí. We highly suggest spending a few days exploring, and seeing the amazing buildings he designed. For more information about which to visit, read more in our piece about visiting Spain in January.
From Barcelona we also recommend learning more about and exploring Montserrat, a monk retreat in the mountains where visitations by the Virgin Mary have been reported, and which also offer up some of the best views over the mountains of Catalunya.
This Benedictine monk mountain retreat has been the site of a monastery since around 880 AD, and it is just around an hour from Barcelona by train, making for the perfect day trip.
3. Visit Bilbao During the Zinebi International Documentary Film Festival
Between November 8 and 15, 2024, Bilbao is home to the Zinebi International Documentary Film Festival. For those interested in documentary films, this is the perfect time of the year to visit Bilbao with documentary filmmakers from all over the world attending the screenings and awards. It is a great opportunity to see the best of the new documentaries.
Bilbao itself is also worth visiting regardless of the festival. It is a fun city with beaches, hikes, and plenty of bars and restaurants to keep your evenings busy.
Bilbao is also home to a Guggenheim Museum, the architecture of which itself is worth a visit. Inside, you'll find modern and contemporary art from artists all over the world, being one of the largest museums in Spain. Famous pieces inside include "The Man from Naples" by Jean-Michel Basquiat and "Seascape" by Gerhard Richter. Themed exhibitions from all over the world also stop by frequently. More information about which can be found on their website.
If you are interested in art, it's worth getting a tour guide for this museum, being that the architecture and the contents are one of a kind. Global Highlights can help you arrange this to make sure you make the most of your visit. Contact us.
4. Visit Seville's Royal Alcázar
Seville is perfect to visit in November, when, after the sweltering summer months, the days are still relatively warm and bright. There is also plenty to see in this beautiful southern Spanish city.
We recommend visiting The Alcázar, a historic royal palace that was originally the site of Seville's Islamic citadel. Construction of the palace started in the 10th century, but building has continued through the centuries to expand it and for it to evolve with the changing rulers and religions of the region over time.
Seville also has a bustling Jewish quarter, comprised of a maze of narrow streets and alleys with restaurants, beautiful squares, and lots of shops at which to find souvenirs to take home to your friends and family.
In November, Seville also hosts the Seville European Film Festival, likely between November 21 and 27, with dates for 2024 still to be confirmed. If you are into film this is a great opportunity, but be mindful that the city will be busier in this week.
Crowds and Costs for Traveling in November
November is generally the low tourist season in Spain, with the exception of some of the specific festivals mentioned above in Seville and Bilbao particularly.
Given that Spain is always a popular tourist destination, we do recommend booking ahead to ensure that you don't get caught out with high last-minute accommodation and transportation prices.
In November, Spain also celebrates All Saints' Day on November 1. This can see some closures depending on the size of museum or restaurant you are trying to visit, so we do recommend asking your hotel whether attractions are open before you set off, or calling ahead where possible.
What to Wear in November
Spain's weather is cool to mild in November, with temperatures bordering on cold in the evenings in Madrid, and warm temperatures in Seville during the day time. As a result, we recommend bringing lots of layers so that you don't get caught out regardless of whether you're visiting the south in the beginning of the month of the north towards late November and early December.
Bringing a light coat is not a bad idea, and an extra jumper to keep you warm during the evenings is also suggested, particularly in Madrid. You don't want to get cold on your way home from tapas!
