June is a great time of the year to visit Denmark, with bright, sunny days and mild weather throughout the country. Although there is a chance of the occasional rain, this isn't worth changing your trip for. June is also just before the peak tourist season begins in Denmark (July and August), giving you the best of both worlds: fewer crowds, lower prices, and decent weather.

For visitors in June, we recommend visiting Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus, and going to Roskilde festival, one of the best musical festivals in the entire world that draws visitors from all over the country.

1. Have a Hygge Copenhagen Day

You have likely heard of hygge, the Danish cultural concept of cosiness and contentment and wellbeing. If you want to experience this feeling in Denmark, why not have a day surrounded by things that make you happy in Copenhagen?

Start off by walking around Jægersborggade, a street in Copenhagen where you'll find galleries, grocery shops with organic produce, boutique jewelry, and vintage clothes shops. If you like shopping and browsing, this is the place to be.

Vesterbro is another neighborhood that is worth checking out, particularly if you're into nightlife and food. Sample some of the delicious dishes at the restaurants and stroll between delicious cafés. If you do happen to come across a rainy day, this is the perfect spot to enjoy Copenhagen's city atmosphere indoors. There is no shortage of trendy coffee spots with fresh pastries.

If you are a more active traveler, there is nothing more hygge than taking in the current moment and slow down on two wheels. You can rent a bike in Copenhagen and enjoy the sights this way too, if that is what you prefer.

2. Learn Everything There Is to Know about Famous Fairytale Author Hans Christian Andersen in Odense

Did you know that Hans Christian Andersen, the author of The Emperor's New Clothes, The Nightingale, The Princess and the Pea, and the Little Mermaid, is Danish? His hometown of Odense is worth visiting as a day trip from Copenhagen, or to spend the night.

Odense is just around 2 hours away from Copenhagen, and is home to the Hans Christian Andersen House, where you can learn about his famous fairytales but also about the author himself. For more information check out our piece about visiting Denmark in January.

3. Visit the Viking Stronghold of Aarhus, and Hike the City or Surrounding Areas

Aarhus, on Denmark's Jutland peninsula, has an important history as a Viking stronghold back in the day. At the time, it was known as Aros.

This history is fascinating to explore on foot, and we recommend walking from the Aarhus Theater to the Moellestien Loop. This path mostly takes you through the city, and takes around 2 hours if you didn't stop anywhere along the way. However, there are so many great stops en-route, and we do recommend taking your time to explore.

On the way you will see Aarhus' Cathedral, which you can learn more about in this piece about visiting Denmark in May. There are also the Saint Clemens Bridge, the Art Academy, as well as the Aarhus Theater, which is found in a beautiful building.

Walking around is the best way to enjoy the beautiful architecture of the city.

4. Visit One of the Best Music Festivals in the World in Roskilde

If you are into music, you've undoubtedly heard of Roskilde, one of the best and most famous music festivals in the world. It is also one of the oldest music festivals in Europe, dating back to 1971.

In 2025, Roskilde is held between June 28 and July 5, with headliners including Doja Cat, Jungle, Tyler, Skrillex, Ice Spice, the Foo Fighters, SZA, and J Hus. More acts are still to be announced, and 2025 dates are also yet to be announced.

You can get day tickets, or get tickets to the entire festival and camp on site. Regardless of what you want to do, timing your visit to Denmark with Roskilde is a great idea if you are into popular music, ranging from rock to hip hop and metal.

If you want to visit a more low-key music festival, NorthSide Festival also happens in Aarhus between June 5 and 7 in 2025. This festival both sees international and Danish acts, and is smaller than Roskilde but still worth a visit if you like music!

Crowds and Costs for Traveling in June

June is the end of the low season, with the end of the month starting to come into peak tourist season. This is because of the good summer weather in Denmark, as well as the summer holidays around the world. As a result of this, the prices towards the end of June are higher, but if you go earlier in June, you will likely see fewer crowds at the big tourist sites.

June is also when Denmark celebrates Constitution Day (on June 5 every year). This is a public holiday and you will find that some restaurants and shops are closed. On June 23, every year, Denmark also celebrates Sankt Hans (who is known in English as John the Baptist). This is also the summer solstice, and traditionally there will be parties with families or bonfires on the beach or at Copenhagen harbor.

What to Wear in June

Given that the weather in June is cool to mild, with chances of higher temperatures towards the end of the month, we recommend bringing a range of different layers to keep warm in case you are there on a cooler day, or more summery clothing for a warmer day. It is worth bringing a jacket just in case, too. Unfortunately, temperatures can range quite a bit in June, so we would suggest preparing for both scenarios.

We do also recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat or sunglasses, as well as supportive footwear to ensure you're comfortably able to do all of the exploring you want to do!
