How Many Days Are Needed for a Trip to Italy?

By Chris Quan | Updated Apr. 7, 2024

Did you know that Italy is the country with the most UNESCO World Heritage sites? Italy's not just about ruins and museums, though — its coastline and food are just as legendary.

But here's the thing: are you trying to see everything in Italy in one go? It's nearly impossible! That's why planning your time wisely is key, especially if it's your first time.

Depending on how long you're there, your trip could have a whole different vibe. Our article's got your back, though, with tips and ideas to help you figure out just how many days you need to soak up all that Italian goodness.

How Long to Spend in Italy

Seven to 14 days is the popular range for a classic first-visit Italy itinerary, covering Italy's most popular cities with their history, culture, and food highlights.

Here are Italy's most popular destinations with their suggested visit lengths:

  • Rome: You would need 2 to 3 full days in Rome to experience the essence of the city — the Colosseum, the Vatican, and other classic city sightseeing.
  • Florence: To get a better sense of Florence's classic charm and Renaissance history, a period of 2 to 3 full days is appropriate, covering city sightseeing, must-visit galleries and museums, and a food tour experience.
  • Tuscany: This large region contains many well-known cities, with Florence as its capital. There are many other popular destinations, such as Cinque Terre, Pisa, Siena, and Lucca. If you want to fully explore the area, it would take about 1 week.
  • Venice: Exploring Venice would take about 1 to 2 full days. You could enjoy the city highlights with a gondola ride and a food tour or go island-hopping.
  • Milan: 1 or 2 full days are suitable for a visit to Milan for the city highlights and shopping or to explore its opera and theater.
  • The Amalfi Coast: You would need about 3 to 4 full days to explore the Amalfi Coast's stunning scenery and some of the popular seaside villages, such as Positano.
  • Sicily: As the biggest island in Italy, you would need about 1 week to experience its beaches, historical sites, food, and volcano scenery.
  • Naples: It takes about 1 or 2 full days for Naples city sightseeing with a food experience. If you are interested in nearby Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, a steep volcano, you should add one more day for them.

1-Week Italy Itineraries

A week is a basic time frame for a trip to Italy. With a 1-week trip, you could consider visiting the three classic-tour Italian cities: Rome, Florence, and Venice.

If you prefer a more relaxed travel pace, we suggest visiting two of them. For families, Rome and Venice are the recommended combination. Rome is best for history and Venice offers more interesting activities, such as taking a gondola ride and island-hopping. You could get ideas in our 7-Day Flash Family Adventure in Rome and Venice.

For couples, Rome and Florence are recommended. Both of these cities are best at narrating Italy's history and culture. Florence's galleries and museums are the best places to learn about Renaissance works. A food tour in Florence is also a fantastic experience you could have. See our 7-Day Rome and Florence Tour.

There is also a time-smart itinerary for all three cities. If you want to make the most of your 1-week vacation and don't want to miss any of these cities, this itinerary would make it possible. Check out our 7-Day Essential Italy Tour (Venice, Florence, and Rome).

10–12 Days in Italy

An itinerary of 10–12 days would ensure a more relaxed travel pace or you could explore one more place than with a 7-day itinerary.

For a 10-day itinerary, Rome, Florence, and Venice are still the most popular recommendations. Compared with the 7-day duration, you would have more time to explore. This means that there is no need to fill up every day, so the schedule is more flexible.

Such a pace of travel is suitable for families. Both adults and kids could be comfortable and also enjoy some family time, such as a family cooking class. Check out more itinerary details in our 10-Day Italy Highlights Tour for Families with Teenagers.

If you are interested in Italy's coastlines, it is possible to visit the famous Amalfi Coast and Rome in 10 days. See our 10-Day Rome, Naples, and Amalfi Coast Tour.

If you have 12 days in Italy, you could extend your trip to Milan or Cinque Terre to explore Italy's fashion or fishing villages besides the history and culture immersion in Rome, Florence, and Venice.

2-Week Italy Itineraries

Two weeks in Italy give you the opportunity to connect different regions so that you could explore and experience Italy's different facets — culture, architecture, history, coastlines, and food.

You could explore the core destinations of central and northern Italy (Rome, Florence, and Venice) and also take in the southern city of Naples and the scenic Amalfi coastline.

Or you could focus on another region and explore it fully, such as Tuscany. Spend 1 week exploring Rome, Florence, and Venice and the other week exploring Tuscany's towns, including Pisa, Siena, and Lucca. You could find more 2-week itinerary ideas in our 2-Week Italy Itineraries: 7 Top Ideas

Here is a classic 2-week itinerary idea:

Week one: Venice, Florence, and Rome

  • Days 1–2: Discover Venice's highlights
  • Days 3–4: Visit Florence's museums and take a city walking tour
  • Days 5–6: Explore Rome's highlights and the Vatican
  • Day 7: Transfer to Naples

Week two: Naples and the Amalfi Coast

  • Days 8–9: Discover Naples' history and food
  • Days 10–13: Explore the Amalfi Coast's towns
  • Day 14: Departure

Here is also a popular option for a 2-week itinerary of Italy and Greece or 2 weeks for Italy and Switzerland. If you want to plan such a trip, you could check our recommended 14-Day Italy and Switzerland Family Tour or 14-Day Best of Italy and Greece Tour

3 Weeks or More in Italy

If you have 3 weeks in Italy, you could explore Italy's highlights from north to south and include an island vacation. Spend 1 week in Rome, Florence, and Venice, spend 1 week exploring the southern Naples and Amalfi Coast, and head to Sicily in the last week.

Alternatively, the other popular choice is to connect Italy with nearby countries. Greece and Switzerland are both popular destinations close to Italy. You could spend 2 weeks in Italy and 1 week in Greece to visit Athens and an island.
