The Best Places to Visit in Finland in April

April might be spring in Finland, but the vast majority of the country is still covered in a blanket of snow for a great escape into a winter wonderland. It is only in the south of the country where the temperatures are just rising above freezing point.

To visit Finland in April, we recommend starting off in Helsinki and Tampere, and then venturing to Levi and Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland. This gives a great mix of tourist sightseeing and an escape into nature.

1. Walk around Helsinki's Top Sights, from Cathedrals to Museums

Helsinki is a great city to walk around in, and with April seeing temperatures above freezing point, you'll be able to spend more time outdoors. We recommend wrapping up warm, and going in and out of tourist sites, stopping for a hot chocolate or a coffee when you need to warm up.

Start off at Helsinki Cathedral, a 19th-century neoclassical cathedral and one of the main landmarks of the country. You can read more about visiting it in our piece about visiting Finland in January.

From there, we suggest visiting Aleksanterinkatu, the main commercial street, which is also one of the oldest streets in the city. It's got some great shops, and you'll be able to see Helsinki's old trams there too. Not far away, the Kamppi Chapel of Silence is an interesting sight, as it's a large wooden structure, meant to be a place of calm in a busy city.

Depending on your energy levels and time, we suggest heading to the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Finnish Parliament Building, the Helsinki Music Center, the Helsinki Central Library, and the National Museum of Finland. All of these are unique pieces of architecture worth visiting, and the National Museum of Finland is also a great place to learn more about Finnish history.

2. Visit Tampere's Pyynikki Observation Tower and Park

On the 150th anniversary of Tampere, in 1929, a 26-meter (or 85 feet) red granite tower was opened in Tampere. This is the best place to see views over the city, as the name Pyynikki Observation Tower suggests, and is one of the most famous sights as a result. On the ground level you will find a great cafe selling traditional Finnish donuts known as munkki in Finnish.

The nearby park and church are beautiful for a walk around, and the views from there over the surrounding Näsijärvi Lake and Pyhäjärvi Lake are impressive. If you are up for it, there are a few walking trails, including the Pyynikki Nature Trail from the observation tower which is approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) in length.

If you are interested in Finnish woodlands this is a great trail to hike that is not too long, nor too difficult. And if you really want to immerse yourself in Finnish nature, Tampere has lots of spots that combine saunas and ice swimming.

3. Marvel at the Northern Lights in Levi

Levi, located in northern Finland's Lapland, is one of the country's biggest sites for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. It is located approximately 170 kilometers (or 110 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, making it a great place to see the northern lights, too.

The northern lights season in Levi lasts approximately 7 months, between mid-August and mid-April, making early April a good time of the year to go and see these incredible displays of colors and lights in the Finnish skies.

In terms of skiing, the slopes in Levi are most suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers, with only a handful of advanced slopes. The region is also well-known for cross-country skiing, which is a great way to see the beautiful forests. Global Highlights can also help you arrange a snowmobile trip if you'd prefer to relax after skiing, or if you want to see the forests at a higher speed!

4. Visit Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi

Lapland in Finland is where Santa Claus is from, and the regional capital of Rovaniemi is home to Santa Claus Village, open all months of the year. You can meet Santa Claus himself there, every day of the year.

Even in April you will still find the village covered in a blanket of snow, with lots of activities for all ages, including snowmobiling, meeting Santa's elves and his adorable reindeer.

The area around Rovaniemi is also great to take in the beautiful nature, and you can take a snowmobile ride or a husky sled to explore further into the forest. It is really a unique location, home to just 65,000 people and over 12,000 reindeer.

Rovaniemi is also a good place for another opportunity to see the northern lights, for example at Arktikum Park or around the Arctic Circle Hiking Area.

Low Season: Less Expensive and Fewer Crowds

April is not in the peak tourist season in Finland, and, as a result, there are fewer tourists at the popular sights, and prices for transportation and accommodation are relatively lower.

The only exception to this is the Easter period, when more tourists will travel to Finland and some attractions might also be closed. In 2025, the public holidays in Finland fall on April 18 (Good Friday), April 20 (Easter Sunday), and April 21 (Easter Monday). In 2026, these dates respectively are April 3, April 5 and April 6. If you are traveling on those days we recommend calling ahead to ensure where you want to visit is open to avoid disappointment.

What to Wear in April

Even though April is the start of spring in Finland, we still recommend wrapping up warm, particularly if you are heading to the north of Finland. You will wear thick waterproof winter coats, boots, thick socks, and lots of layers underneath, including thermal underwear.

It's possible to rent ski equipment at the ski resorts, but we do suggest packing a scarf, a hat, and gloves. You'll need those for your regular exploring either way.
