Israel Weather in April: Warm and Dry

By Ishaan | Updated Jul. 18, 2023

April marks the complete onset of spring in Israel. The weather conditions are largely warm and dry with little to no chance of rain. With the exception of the Dead Sea region which experiences warmer weather conditions than do other parts of Israel, days are comfortable in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Tiberias. The odd chance of it raining in April does exist in Jerusalem and Tiberias but only for a handful of days.

April is a month in the off-season, meaning not as many tourists frequent the country. Therefore, the best tourist spots and destinations can be visited in April in relative ease and quiet. That being said, Passover and Easter – two extremely important festivals in Israel – result in large crowds of travelers and pilgrims from all over the country and the world visiting Israel, and Jerusalem in particular, during the days leading up to these holidays. Businesses are closed during the first and last days of Passover and disruptions in public transportation are common. The influx of tourists during these two periods of the month leads to an increase in prices.

Winter wear is not a necessity if you're traveling in Israel during April. A sweater or a jacket for the slightly cooler evenings in Jerusalem may be needed but for the most part, all you really need to pack are your comfortable summer clothes.

Best Places to See in Israel in April

1. Jerusalem

If there's one place we cannot recommend enough for you to visit during April in Israel, it is Jerusalem! Yes, this oft-mythologized metropolitan will be crowded during Easter and Passover but few places on the planet can match up to the festive atmosphere that Jerusalem produces during these two holidays. The city is decorated from north to south and from east to west, and offers visitors the chance to experience processions, ceremonies, and free museum visits during these festive periods.

2. Tel Aviv

It's comfortable and dry in Tel Aviv in April, and if you're looking to get away from the festive crowds of Jerusalem, so you can relax and recharge your batteries in relative quiet, this city might be more your pace. Visits to the Jewish National Museum, tranquil walks in The Old City of Yafo, and an immersion into the lives of the locals at the Carmel Food Market, all make for excellent sight-seeing options for you to consider during your time in Tel Aviv.

3. Ein Bokek and the Dead Sea

April is perhaps one of the last months with good weather in the Dead Sea region until Autumn. As such, if you've always wanted to explore this region and swim in the famed waters of the Dead Sea and cover yourself in the mineral-rich black mud of its beaches, be sure to visit the area during April as it gets far too hot later during the peak summer months.

April Crowds and Costs

April is still considered part of the off-season in Israel. There are, however, two exceptions to this general rule and they take place during the holy weeks leading up to, or during, Easter and Passover.

The week leading up to Easter sees Christians from all over the country and even overseas visit Jerusalem to experience the holy festival. Similarly, the days leading up to Passover and its seven days of observance are marked by busy crowds visiting the tourist sights and popular holiday spots. Prices will go up during these two periods of April, so plan in advance, and expect a few disruptions in business hours and services like public transportation.

The rest of April, though, doesn't see too much activity insofar as tourism is concerned. Places like Tel Aviv and Tiberias are especially quiet, laid-back, and free of major price hikes during the month.

What to Wear in Israel in April

Considering it is warm and dry in most parts of Israel during April, it is essential you pack comfortable, loose-fitting summer clothes, shorts, comfortable walking shoes, and a hat for your daytime adventures. The evenings in Jerusalem can get slightly chilly, so it wouldn't hurt to carry a sweater either.

It's also a good idea to pack a skirt or dress that doesn't show your knees if you plan to visit the Western Wall or Shabbat, as it is to carry an umbrella for the unlikely – but possible – chance of rainfall during your time in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.

Ein Bokek in the Dead Sea will be hot and dry during April and all you need to pack for your time here are your bathing suits, summer clothes, and towels.

April Events in Israel

Passover (Pesach): Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is hands down, the most important and central of all holidays in Judaism. Passover celebrates the redemption and escape of followers of the Jewish faith from over 400 years of slavery, whilst also serving as a reminder to not take that freedom for granted. Passover is celebrated all over Israel with some of the best festivities taking place in Jerusalem. The first and last days of Passover are holidays, with all work being forbidden, so expect businesses to be closed on these days. For the days in between, you may find some businesses only operating for part of the day. Public transportation, too, remains inoperative for Passover Eve, along with the first and last days of the holiday.

Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Independence Day): Yom Ha'Atzmaut is an official holiday commemorating the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. Official performances, speeches, and ceremonies take place, and parties and firework displays can be observed all over the country on this day. It is an official holiday, meaning all schools and businesses remain shut.

Easter: Easter, or Pascha in Hebrew, is celebrated all over Israel, with the biggest celebrations taking place in Jerusalem. Christians from all over the country and even abroad visit the capital hoping to catch the Good Friday Procession in the Christian Quarter of the Old City. Although not an official national holiday in the country, you can expect many business owners, especially those belonging to the Christian faith, to take the day off.

Yom Ha'Aliyah (Aliyah Day): Yom Ha'Aliyah is a very significant national holiday commemorating the immigration of the first Jewish settlers in what is present-day Israel. The holiday is usually celebrated in March or April, depending on which day of the year the 10th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan coincides with. Since school is not in session during this time of the year, the holiday is celebrated again at the end of the calendar year around October, so students can be taught the importance of this day in Jewish history. Although an official holiday, most businesses remain open as usual during Yom Ha'Aliyah.
