The Best Places to Visit in Israel in July

July is the middle of Israel's hot summer, and its only month that is a little hotter is August. Regardless of this, July is high season in Israel, with tourists coming to spend their summer holidays alongside the Mediterranean Sea and amongst the incredible sights.

For a visit in July, we recommend visiting Jerusalem, going to Tel Aviv, hitting up one of Tel Aviv's many beaches, and then going diving into the Red Sea to explore the incredible marine life that can be found there.

1. Visit the Holiest City in the World — Jerusalem

Being of religious importance in both Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, Jerusalem is likely the holiest city in the world, and thus a must-see for anybody visiting Israel.

Visit the beautiful Old City, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Western Wall, the Mount of Olives, and the Temple Mount to capture the significance of this city. We recommend sightseeing in the early mornings or towards the end of the day when the temperature will have dropped slightly, but due to low humidity it does not feel as hot as it is.

You can also visit the Israel Museum or take yourself to the Machaneh Yehudah Market to do some shopping and see what daily life in Jerusalem is like.

2. Venture to the Depths of the Red Sea in Eilat

July is the perfect time to head to one of Israel's many beaches, and the Red Sea awaits anybody who wants to dive, or learn to dive for the first time. While there is excellent visibility all year round, July sees warmer waters enticing tourists to come and see the corals and reefs.

Eilat is a special location to dive because you can see the corals and fish quite close to the beach, and many of the diving sites are also accessible from shore. This also means that there are plenty of snorkeling opportunities for those who would prefer to be a little closer to the shore.

3. Take in the Bustling Metropolis of Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is an incredibly fun city, with plenty to do for everybody, no matter what kind of traveler you are. The nightlife has drawn many tourists, and if you'd like to explore Tel Aviv's bars and clubs you can entertain yourself for days.

It is also a cultural city, home to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, as well as the ANU Museum of the Jewish People. Along with the Palmach Museum, the Joseph Bau House Museum, and the Old City, there is a lot to see and learn.

We recommend spending a couple of days in Tel Aviv to see all the sights and get a feel for this incredible metropolis.

4. Sunbathe on Banana Beach

For those who prefer to relax by the beach, Tel Aviv and the surrounding area is home to many beaches (13 official beaches spread along Tel Aviv's Coastline).

Your options include Banana Beach, Gordon Beach, Jerusalem Beach, or even Coral Reef Beach, as well as many others. For a slightly quieter beach, try Alma Beach. You can easily visit a different beach every day of your stay.

The beaches also have plenty of options for water sports, and you'd see Israelis playing Matkot, a local version of racquetball. Beach vendors sell watermelon with feta cheese, popsicles, and cold drinks.

High Season: More Crowding and Higher Costs

July is peak season for tourists visiting Israel, competing only with August for the top spot. There will be more crowds at the top tourist destinations, and you can also expect higher travel and accommodation costs as a result.

For visitors to Israel at any month in the year it is important to remember that every Friday evening until Saturday is Sabbath, an important day of religious observance as well as abstinence from work. As a result, businesses are closed every Saturday.

In July, the Jerusalem Arts and Crafts Festival also takes place in the Old City. You'll find lots of artisans showcasing their work throughout the month, and there are also live music shows and dance performances.

What to Wear in July

For visitors to Israel in July, we recommend wearing clothing that will keep you cool and comfortable. This includes both natural fabrics as well as light-colored clothing, such as linen shirts or cotton trousers or dresses.

We also recommend wearing supportive and comfortable shoes, particularly for more active travelers, and plenty of beach gear to set you up for success on the beach! We recommend bringing a snorkel and mask if you have your own set, as well as some sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to keep your face out of the sun.

For those planning on visiting the Biblical sites or venturing to the churches and mosques, we recommend bringing your own headscarf as you'll have to cover your head to go inside. You can usually rent or borrow one too, but it's easier to have your own.
