1. Stockholm — Experience the Urban Highlights, History, and the Outdoors

Stockholm is Sweden's capital and biggest city. It is a unique capital city in that the city is on a little archipelago of 3,000 small islands where you can enjoy the warm weather and sun-warmed water in lagoons and ponds to swim, hike, kayak, boat, and fish.

There is a combination of long days and twilight until August 19, and then short nights intervene daily. In August, the sea temperature is highest. The average maximum sea temperature in Stockholm is 21°C (70°F). Swimming is tolerable.

The average daily highs are 22°C (72°F). The average high-humidity conditions of 78% feel like 23°C (73°F). The lows average 13°C (55°F). Rainfall is low. The relatively warm weather and abundant daylight provides a good setting for many outdoors festivals, sports events, and festivities. Tourism and touring prices moderate after about the middle of August.

2. Kungsleden Trail — Enjoy Lapland Wilderness Hiking

In August, the mild temperatures and the 17½ hours of daylight in the area of Abisko and the Kungsleden hiking path are suitable for long safe hikes. There is extra light to light your way for another 2 or 3 hours during twilight. There is an average of 8 hours of sunshine per day.

The Kungsleden Trail begins in the village of Abisko where there are high prices for accommodations and restaurant meals. The tourist crowds lessen at August's end. The average August high in Abisko is 13°C (55°F) and the nightly low is 5°C (41°F). There is usually moderate rainfall.

The Kungsleden trail passes through forests where mosquitoes are common, so dress appropriately. There are stocked huts and cabins every 15 kilometers (9 miles) or so for shelter from the elements and mosquitoes.

For more daylight and even brighter sun in August, you could go further north to Tromsø or Alta. For more about these Norwegian tourist towns, see Norway Weather in July.

3. Gotland and Fårö Islands — Enjoy Warm Weather and Warm Water, the Beaches, and the History

Fårö and Gotland are adjacent popular islands for Swedes in August. In the first week of August, the Gotland Medieval Week draws 10,000s to the island annually to celebrate the island's history and battles won. There are sandy beaches on both islands. The weather is good for the festivals.

You can bask and swim in some of the average 9 hours of sunshine and 15 hours of daylight. The average daily highs are 21°C (70°F). The lows are pleasant for sleeping at 13°C (55°F). The rain is low. Off Fårö, the sea's average daily high is 21°C (70°F) also.

Fårö is a small island about 10 minutes from Gotland by ferry. A notable natural feature of Fårö is a long fine white sand beach called Sudersand Beach. The sea is warmest in August and is tolerable for swimming for many people. It might feel warm in shallow inlets and ponds in the islands.

4. Umeå — Experience the Varied Mix of Weather, Sea, Lake, High Tech, Culture, University, Forest, Mountain, and Sub-Arctic Wilderness

In August, as the dark and chilly weather of fall mixes with the light and warmth of summer, you might enjoy going to the out-of-the-way city of Umeå that is on the Baltic Sea at latitude 63°. It is a unique Swedish city just south of the Arctic Circle.

The location gives Umeå a nicer mix of warm temperatures and long days than the far north or the south. There is an average of 16 hours of daylight, and there is no nighttime in August. The average daily highs are 19°C (66°F). The lows are 10°C (50°F).

You can kayak and fish for sea fish around the offshore islands or on the freshwater rivers and lakes. You might like to dine on local wild game and berries or international seafood cuisine. There is a fast train from Stockholm that arrives in about 6 hours.

High Tourism Season: Touring Advice for August

Except for places with big festivals and events such as Gotland Island, most of Sweden's popular summer highlights have lesser crowding and lower prices in August than in July. Tourist crowds and prices moderate especially after the middle of the month when school and university terms begin.

With an average of 15 or more hours of warmth and daylight, you can see twice as much of Sweden's thousands of islands, long mountain chains, wild arctic wilderness, vast green original forests, and glaciers.

There are no national holidays in August.

What to Wear in August

Temperatures are usually comfortable and warm in the south during the day at low elevations when you are wearing light clothing such as long-sleeved shirts and trousers during the day. Sunburn and mosquito and bug bites are problems you could avoid in August by covering your skin with light clothing and a sunhat.

The bright sunshine might make you feel warm or hot at times even in the north. Heatwaves sometimes make the north warmer than the south. However, it might get cool when it is darkest. It is best to bring along a coat, especially if you are planning on hiking in the north or mountains.

Sweden has low rainfall compared to most other European countries. August is one of the rainiest months. So, bring raingear or an umbrella as well. The mountains have unpredictable weather, so stay abreast of weather reports in the mountains.

The sea is too cold to swim in comfortably without a wetsuit. For example, the average max seawater temperature in August at Visby is 22°C (72°F). However, many ponds and small lakes are comfortable for swimming.

Here is a packing list for a few essentials in Sweden:

  • Waterproof boots with good traction for hikes and being outdoors. You might wear them in-flight to travel lightly.
  • Comfortable shoes with good traction
  • Rain gear
  • Warm hat
  • Sunhat
  • Mosquito net and mosquito repellant
  • Some light clothing
  • Swimwear for spas and hot springs and lakes
  • Pullovers or fleece jackets especially for mountains and north
  • Polarized glasses
